Tenerife's volcanic nature, and mostly rocky coastline due to the evolution of the island
Some examples of the beaches in Tenerife are as follows:
Los
Gigantes – a lovely, small, coved
harbour-town with a black sand beach in west
Torviscas - Yellow grey
sand beach, showers, shallow waters, sun beds and shades, near marina,
restaurants, bars, situated in south Tenerife.
Playa de Las
Candaleria – a lovely historically-important village in east
Puerto de La Cruz - in north
Tenerife, one of the oldest tourist resorts in
El Medano – situated
in eastern
Callao Salvaje - This lovely and peaceful village is on the on the west coast (en route to Los Gigantes) and has a 'British-style esplanade (sea front walk-way), from which you can view La Gomera.
Puerto Colon - close to Las Americas, this peaceful enclave offers the most lovely marina where innumerable excursions leave daily - including catamaran 'booze cruises' , whale and dolphin watching and deep-sea fishing. There is an excellent golden sand beach with shower facilities, and a walk-way bordered by many bars and restaurants and gift shops.
Las Galletas – There are really two beaches in Las Galletas – one in front of the ‘esplanade’ (sea-front walk - left), which, although a pebble beach, is hugely popular with cafes like the hugely popular 'The Pink Parrot' (owned by English couple Martin and Lillian Proud), and Belgian host Willy's The Euro Bar, where there is regular, top-quality entertainment every night of the week; the second is a black-sand beach on the edge of the local harbour. Major plans are afoot to extend the harbour-front beach (below) with an imported golden-sand one which will extend back from the harbour over 50 metres.
Playa de la Arena - Located in the heart of the small tourist resort of Puerto Santiago, La Arena beach stands out for its excellent setting and extraordinary amount of light. The beach is 120 metres long with fine volcanic sand and a full range of facilities. There are a number of restaurants and shops, and the nearby hotels make for one of the most family-friendly beaches for locals and visitors alike.
El Duque - A fine golden-sand beach located in one of the newest areas of Costa Adeje and bordered by a lovely seafront promenade which joins together 8 beaches. The sea is calm and the beach extends for almost 700 metres. The Playa del Duque is sure to please all who visit especially as it has all the services you would expect from such high quality surroundings. There is a sun lounger and parasol service, as well as parking, restaurants, bars, showers, changing rooms, toilets and telephones.
La Tejita - Connected to El Médano beach via the Montaña Roja nature reserve, this is a one-kilometre long beach of fine golden sand. Right next to the spectacular Montaña Roja is this small cove which makes a cosy beach, mainly used by nudists. This beach has no facilities, except a small stand selling drinks. However, it is exactly this natural environment, its clean sand, and calm waters that attract visitors.
La Caleta - The beach here is a rugged mix of rocks and shingle but large white sand areas have been added for sunbathing. One of those, El Chiringuito, has a small bar and an anchored floating platform in the sea. At the end of the beach is the village of La Caleta and the small cove it is named after. The cove really has no beach to speak of, but there are a number of large water-smoothed slabs of rock separated by narrow channels which are popular with sun-worshippers, and metal stairs for those wishing to swim.
